There are still four worled championship races to run, but Pedro Acosta may already snatch the title this weekend in Thailand. The future MotoGP rider with KTM will have a first match point at the Chang International Circuit, having amassed seven race wins and five podiums to date. After a few wobbles early on, Acosta has gone on to dominate the season aboard the Kalex.

Acosta again made the difference in Australia

Now holding a significant lead, Acosta has demonstrated a superiority in the category that now puts him in a position to be able to lift his second world title trophy at Buriram. A superiority we saw last time out in Australia. Despite a crash during the sighting lap and the fact the race ran in the rain, the young rider from Murcia was able to cross the line a very solid ninth.

Acosta’s chances of winning the title

He has only one direct rival, in the form of Tony Arbolino. Acosta would be the new Moto2 world champion if he were to win the race and the Italian does no better than tenth. Or if Acosta were to finish second and Arbolino no higher than fifteenth. But we know that anything can happen in the race and that it’s only over until they pass beneath the chequered flag. So we’ll have to wait and see where Acosta and Arbolino finish in Sunday’s 22-lap race.
