Finally, after a long period of silence and myriad hypotheses from the press, fans and staff, we have received clarification as to the penalty handed to Marc Marquez after Portimao.

Marc Marquez: the decision regarding the penalty

The notification issued by the Stewards after the Portuguese GP specified that the Spanish rider, having caused an accident with Miguel Oliveira, would have to serve a double long lap penalty during the Argentinian GP on 2 April.

It has since emerged that the eight-time world champion will not take part in the Argentinian race because he has a fractured first metacarpal on his right hand. And this has led to a storm of speculation, the thinking being that, if Marc does not compete at Termas de Rio Hondo, he will get away with not having to serve the penalty at all.

But now, on Tuesday morning, the FIM has confirmed that: “Following the decision of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel, the Panel hereby clarifies its decision as regards applicability.”

“Considering the injury and non-participation of Marc Marquez, Rider #93, in the Argentinian GP, and with a view to comply with the intention underlying the decision taken by the Stewards Panel, the Double Long Lap Penalty shall be served by the Rider at the next MotoGP race in which he will be able to participate.”

This means that if Marc were to return in time for Austin, on 16 April, he will have to serve the penalty during the Texan race.
