MotoGP, Alonso a guest at the Red Bull Ring: “A sprint race? A great idea”

The F1 driver and world champion extols the new format, trusting in Ezpeleta

The recent Austrian race weekend brought news, debate and controversy. From the new chicane to the different opinions of riders regarding the new Sprint Race format that will be introduced in 2023.

F1 champion Fernando Alonso also had something to say about this latest initiative as he visited the Aprilia garage as a guest during the Red Bull Ring round. “I think it’s a great idea – states the Alpine driver – because it means more action on Saturday and so we’ll be glued to the TV even earlier, and not just on Sunday. It won’t influence grid positions for Sunday either, so the riders will be able to take more risks, knowing that they won’t compromise their grid position.”

Total faith in Ezpeleta

In the interview with motogp.com, the Spaniard confirms that he thinks the “sprint” could help remedy the recent drop in spectator numbers. He also fully supports championship boss Carmelo Ezpeleta: “Everything that Carmelo Ezpeleta and MotoGP do serves as inspiration for other categories. This will be another example of that.”

The new format will come into being as of next season, despite the fact that most of the riders are not in agreement with this decision, deeming it senseless and risky.
