Just as Joan Mir did this year, Fabio Quartararo has also opted against competing with the number 1 plate in 2022, a number that only the current world champion can choose. The Frenchman has already made his decision, one he bases on… history.

The same number for his whole career

Interviewed by Infosport+, the 22-year old is clear: “It’s not worth it. I really want to keep everything simple. And I’m not even close to number one right now”. He refers to his hero: For me Valentino Rossi is the example - he’s won nine world titles and has never ridden with the number one. I think it’s nice for the spectators mainly, because no one’s used it for years. But 20 is the number I started with, and the one with which I’ll finish my career”.

Surprise party

Going back to Sunday at Misano, a day he’ll remember for the rest of his life, he admits he knew nothing of what was planned: “I didn’t know about the celebration. I know they were planning a helmet and a party but, because I’m quite superstitious, I preferred not to get involved”. The party was done in style, with a maxi screen showing a video of Fabio as a child and then the golden helmet he wore: “Many people have worked to organise this celebration and it’s something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life”.
