A little over a year since the last time, Supersport 300 finds itself grieving the loss of another rider. Unfortunately, Steeman has succumbed to his injuries, sustained during an accident in the early stages of Race at Portimão.

 Organ donation

More specifically, Victor crashed at turn 14 become being run over and hit in the head by a blameless Jose Perez Gonzalez. In an immediately critical condition, the team MTM rider was initially treated on track and at the circuit medical centre, where doctors diagnosed polytrauma and serious brain injury. The rider was subsequently airlifted to nearby Faro hospital, where he underwent brain surgery that same evening.

The young rider’s condition unfortunately didn’t improve following the operation and he has since succumbed to his injuries. Born in Zevenaar on 15 June 2000, Steeman was competing in his third full Supersport 300 season and had already scored four wins. As he arrived at Portimão, he was still in the mix for the title.

Victor’s parents have issued the following note via Dorna: “Something you have always been afraid of as a parent of a motorcycle racer has now happened. Our Victor could not win this last race. Despite the unbearable loss and grief, we are extremely proud to share with you that our hero, through his passing, was able to save 5 other people by donating his organs. We would like to thank everyone for the way you have lived with us over the past few days. We will miss our Victor enormously.”

As we’ve said, one year on and the Superport 300 category is once again under the microscope, but now is not the time to discuss such matters. The entire Motosprint editorial team extends its sincere condolences to Victor’s family.
