Randy Krummenacher’s return to the Supersport championship has been further complicated. The 2019 series champion appeared close to signing an agreement with Davide Giugliano’s newly formed team, which would have provided Randy (and team-mate Filippo Fuligni) with a Yamaha R6, but the negotiations have broken down.

A few contractual issues failed to convince the Swiss rider and his entourage, who have therefore decided to pull out of the project and now need to find another path. The outfit now being linked to Krummenacher is the Gas Racing Team, an Italian squad that has been a frontrunner (with the support of the Italian branch of Yamaha Europe) in the CIV Supersport series in recent years, winning the 2018 title with Massimo Roccoli.

Seeking budget

After a positive 2019, with all three of its riders (Bussolotti, Bernardi and Casadei) placing in the top ten in the final CIV SSP standings, 2020 should have seen the Gas Racing Team debut in the world series, competing in all the European rounds with Mattia Casadei as rider, but the consequences of the Covid pandemic made this impossible.

The team looks to be in with another chance in 2021, and could benefit from a top rider like Krummenacher, but the problem is a financial one (as is so often the case in motorsport). The team already has bikes and the spares it needs to take to the grid, but it’s not yet in a position to cover the costs of an entire season.

The fact that there are still some months before the first 2021 round might help the Swiss rider and the Gas Racing Team, but any further wave of the Covid crisis might further complicate plans. It’s hard, if not impossible, to envisage Krummenacher in CIV with the same team, the squad itself still undecided as to whether it will compete in the national series or not.
