Toby Price distrutto: “Abbiamo fatto tutto il possibile per salvare Goncalves”

Tra tutti i protagonisti della Dakar, il più shockato dalla terribile tragedia di ieri è Toby Price. L’australiano, vincitore della prima giornata, ha vissuto il dramma in prima persona, facendo di tutto perché ciò non accadesse; arrivato appena dopo la caduta, il pilota KTM ha prestato soccorsi, con esito negativo.

Il racconto del dramma

Dal suo profilo Instagram ha raccontato così quei brutti momenti: “La tappa di ieri era partita bene - spiega Toby - avevamo un grande ritmo e un ottimo feeling con la moto, questo sino al rifornimento. Paulo è scattato cinque minuti prima di me, ed il peggio era appena accaduto. Ho affrontato una duna, l’ho oltrepassata, ho visto un pilota a terra... si trattava di Paulo.

Ho avuto tanta paura perchè sapevo che si trattava di qualcosa di serio. Ho chiamato i soccorsi il prima possibile e ho aiutato a metterlo su un fianco e a fare i controlli del caso. Ho provato a chiedere altro aiuto e Stefan Svitko (un altro campione), è arrivato in mio soccorso. Il primo elicottero è giunto sul luogo dell’incidente e Luca Alphand stava già iniziando a compiere le manovre di primo soccorso. I dottori, scesi dall’elicottero, erano già pronti ad un intervento di rianimazione, hanno fatto tutto quello che potevano.

Abbiamo aiutato con i sacchetti dei liquidi, prendendo le sacche con le attrezzature mediche e guidando gli altri piloti attorno alla scena dell'incidente. Abbiamo lavorato il più duramente possibile, ma non c’era niente da fare. Ho aiutato a caricarlo (Goncalves ndr.) sino sull’elicottero, era la cosa giusta da fare; sono stato il primo ad arrivare sul luogo dell’incidente e volevo essere l’ultimo ad andarmene. Ci mancheranno il tuo sorriso e le tue risate nel bivacco Speedy”.

Yesterday’s stage was starting well, great pace and feeling good on the bike until the refuel. Paulo took off into the stage about 5 minutes before me and the worst case had happened. I come over a small crest and seen a rider down and was Paulo. Worst fears kicked in cause I knew this one was serious. I called for help ASAP and helped get him on his side (plus more serious checks). Tried calling for more help and by this stage @stefansvitko (also a champion) had arrived and helping where he could. The first helicopter arrive and @luc_alphand_skiator was starting to help and as the medical helicopter arrive they were already on CPR and the doctors got to our sides and work all they could. Helping holding drip bags, getting bags of medical equipment and guiding other riders around a bad scene. We all worked as long as we could but there was nothing we could do. I helped assist carrying him to the helicopter as it was the right thing to do. I was first at his side and wanted to be the last to leave. We will miss you’re smile and laughter in the bivouac #speedy My last 250km of special stage was tough, I’m dehydrated from tears. At the moment I’m not even worried about the result, I couldn’t care. Many thoughts with family and friends on this day, we don’t start the rally day 8 for bike #8 in respect to family and friends and the loss of a HERO.. Thankyou to everyone for the messages of support worldwide, especially Portugal with all the kind things. We are human and this is nothing but just a race, I would give up all my wins to have any of my fellow racing mates back with us..

La fine della settima tappa

Oltretutto, Price è pure riuscito a finire lo stage numero 7, arrivando distrutto fisicamente e moralmente.

“Negli ultimi 250 chilometri sono stati duri, ero completamente disidratato dalle lacrime. Al momento, non mi interessa nulla del risultato finale, ho altre pensieri. Sto pensando alla famiglia ed agli amici, nel loro rispetto e del numero 8 non affronteremo l’ottava tappa della Dakar. Siamo essere umani e non ci sono gare importanti come la vita stessa. Darei tutto ciò che ho vinto per riavere qui con me i compagni di avventura persi”.
