SBK, Mandalika: Toprak opportunistic, Rinaldi embittered| The report card

The Superbikes head back to Europe after a thrilling second round. The Mandalika event was not short on excitement, with crashes for some big names and some unexpected results, which benefitted Toprak Razgatlioglu and Alvaro Bautista, who confirms his place at the top of the standings. It was also a positive weekend for the Italian contingent, and Honda too, which scored its first podium of the season with Xavi Vierge.

Toprak Razgatlioglu 9.5

Scoring more points than Bautista despite winning one less race is the mark of a true champion like the Turk. He may not have replicated last year’s triple but he proved to be the shrewdest rider on the grid, climbing straight back on his steed after the Australian DNF.

Alvaro Bautista 8.5

He showed the world that – at least for now -  he’s human, making his first mistake of the season. Before and after he looked to be a pneumatic drill, demonstrating unrivalled consistency. He’ll head to Europe with a 37-point lead and five race wins, so could hardly ask for more.

Andrea Locatelli 8

He’s already scored more podiums than he did last season, which is saying something. He has now achieved new levels of speed and awareness, making the most of his R1 in every situation. One to watch.

Danilo Petrucci 7

As he continues to adapt to a new bike and championship, Danilo did well in Indonesia, achieving his first top five finish and his first win among the independent riders, all at a track he didn’t know. Petrux is coming.

Michael Van Der Mark 6.5

The man you don’t expect is riding the BMW towards decent results. Sixth place in race 1 is a strong result, as is the fact he was the best placed BMW rider in Superpole. But the dream was over in 2, when he crashed and fractured two fingers on his left hand.
