A convincing performance by Alvaro Bautista on Friday. In FP2 at Phillip Island the Spaniard doesn't just finish on top, but goes as far as to flex his muscles in the process. A glance at the timesheets is enough to show us, with the Aruba rider closing a good half second in front of his closest rival, or rather Michael Rinaldi. A show of strength from Bautista then, who goes into the weekend as the clear favourite.

Rinaldi also does well in confirming the potential of the V4R, just like Phillip Oettl, who finishes a surprising third. The Ducati fleet continues with Danilo Petrucci, who bounces back after the highs and lows of testing, despite closing nine tenths from the front. Breaking the Ducati trend is... not a Kawasaki or a Yamaha but a BMW, that of Garrett Gerloff – the first rider to finish over a second from the front – who proves to be the strongest of the Bavarian representatives.

Razgatliolgu and Rea in difficoltà

As for Yamaha, their first rider is Dominique Aegerter, sixth, who is followed by Andrea Locatelli, while Iker Lecuona and Remy Gardner round out the top ten. Just outside is a positive Lorenzo Baldassarri, able to finish ahead of riders including fellow Yamaha man Toprak Razgatlioglu.

FP2 proved rather complicated for the Turkish rider, who couldn’t do more than thirteenth and closed a second and a half from Bautista. The same goes for Jonathan Rea, fourteenth behind the Turk. A difficult Friday also for Axel Bassani, the last Ducati rider in sixteenth place.
