SBK Australia: a more complicated start than expected for Rea

An FP2 to forget for Johnny: "There was a big drop from morning to afternoon, we need to understand why"

Expecting to see Jonathan Rea on top at the end of Friday at Phillip Island might have been less than logical, but it is surprising quite how much difficulty the Northern Irish rider had during second practice, which he finished outside of the top ten. An unsettling result, as Rea himself admits.

“I felt comfortable riding this morning”, begins Rea, “but in the afternoon I immediately realised I had no rear traction. We don’t have many tyres for the weekend, so we can’t do a lot of experimentation which means I wasn’t able to take any big steps forward. I’m not far off, all told, but I have a few setup issues.”

Rea and Kawasaki, in search of a solution

A solution is clearly needed, although there appears to be no quick fix.

“We need to work on the setup. It’s strange to go from having great pace, as we did this morning and during testing, to struggling to do a low 1’32 – we need to put all pieces of the puzzle back together and understand what the problem is.

The weather might help, with temperatures expected to drop, although the Kawasaki rider is not entirely convinced.

“I prefer cool conditions to be honest, but in the afternoon temperatures look like they’ll rise all weekend, so I don’t think I can really count on that.”
