We all remember Norifumi Abe, the Japanese ace of the 500 class and a fierce competitor in both MotoGP and SBK. The late rider-rock star-samurai may have left us, but his achievements live on. And his legacy, in sporting terms, is passed on to sons Keito and Maiki, with the latter now set to debut in World Supersport.

From Norick to Maiki: the Abe surname returns to the world stage

Of all the Japanese riders competing on the world stage, Norifumi really stood out as a one-of-a-kind. Whether for his long rockstar/samurai-style hair, for the fact he was a man of few words, or for his riding style. An inspiration to Valentino Rossi, Abe did truly great things.

And that’s not all, because as well as racing at the highest level, "Norick" was also a real family man. It’s not easy to make it all work, especially when you are away from home for several months a year. But despite the travel, the absences and the sacrifices, dad (and mum) had two children, Keito and Maiki, both of whom have followed in their father’s footsteps.

Abe and VFT: operation Yamaha

Maiki, now 17, has competed in the All Japan series, in the 600 category, as well as wildcarding in the Asia Road Racing Championship, at Sugo. Linked to the Yamaha brand, the young talent has also taken part in the Suzuka 8 Hours.

And he will continue to represent Yamaha in WorldSSP, because it is the VFT Racing team that will support him during his debut season. Having already confirmed Nicholas Spinelli, Fabio Menghi’s team will field a second R6, specifically prepped for Abe Junior. The Iwata manufacturer will follow his progress directly, the 17-year old clearly in good hands.
