After returning to the track in Andalusia last year, the five-time world champion now stands in for nephew Bahattin on the F3 800 and is keen to uncover its secrets

We realised that Kenan Sofuoglu is still more than able to hold his own in Supersport when, more than four years since he retired, the Turk returned to the track at last year’s Jerez event and rounded out Friday’s practices in seventh place overall.

The five-time champion is an eternal youngster, thanks particularly to his constant training alongside his pupils (starting with Razgatlioglu), and he’s always keen to get back on a bike. Just as he’s doing at Jerez right now, Kenan seizing the opportunity to ride the MV Agusta F3 800 for team MV Agusta Reparto Corse Clienti during the two-day test.

From one Sofuoglu to another

He is in fact standing in for nephew Bahattin Sofuoglu, who will debut with Andrea Quandranti’s team and compete in the European Supersport rounds. The young Turk should have been on track together with team-mate Niki Tuuli, but he was unable to travel to Jerez after testing positive for Covid.

And so to plan B, with Uncle Kenan out on track in Bahattin’s place so that he can pass him as much information as possible, as well as enjoy another high-octane experience. Might Toprak Razgatlioglu’s mentor have a rethink and appear as a wildcard again in 2022?
