Road Races: Davey Todd wins the “Race of Legends” at Armoy

A few weeks after dominating the Southern 100, Davey Todd was able to do it again at another important road race. Aboard the team Padgett Honda, the 26-year old Brit was the weekend’s star performer at Armoy, the winner of four races in all.

After scoring victory in the Open Race, the first of the event’s races, Todd did it again in Supersport races 1 and 2 and, particularly, in the Race of Legends, the “main event”. He’s the first Englishman to do so, after ten years of domination by Michael Dunlop, and he also set a new lap record over the course of the weekend, completed at an average of 108.534 mph (roughly 175 km/h). It was no surprise that he was also named “Man of the Meeting”.

Michael Dunlop a notable absence

While it was a memorable weekend for Todd, the same can’t be said for the aforementioned Michael Dunlop, who was the outright favourite leading up to the event. The 21-time TT winner decided to pull out of the races just a few hours ahead of time in protest, claiming that his team had not been treated in the same way as other teams by the organization.

The riders in attendance still put on a show though, with wins for other National Road Races specialists like Mike Browne in Moto 3, Jamie Coward in the Supertwins and multiple TT winner Ian Lougher, who led the way in the vintage class, but the absence of “The Bull” nevertheless left something of a bitter taste.
