TT 2022, McGuinness: “It could be my last edition as a rider”

The road-racing legend, who is now a Member of the Order of the British Empire, has admitted that this year’s TT may well be his last: “I want to round out my career with a good result”

A few days ago, John McGuinness was at Windsor Castle receiving his MBE for “services to motorcycle racing”. On the same day, the 50-year Brit also spoke about the upcoming 2022 edition of the Tourist Trophy2, in which he will compete with team Honda Racing UK.

“It will be a special edition for many reasons, as I’ll turn 50 before heading to the Isle of Man, I’ll line up for my 100th start and it’s also the 30th anniversary of the Fireblade with which I’ll race”, explains McPint. “The reason I want to go back to the TT once more is because I really want to finish with a good result; I don’t want to round out my career with a technical problem like in 2019. This will probably be my last Tourist Trophy as a rider”.

McPint: “We’ll all be a little anxious as we return to the Island”

One added risk comes in the form of the Mountain Course, back after a two-year absence owing to the pandemic, but the 23-time winner is well aware of this: “We’ll definitely all be a little anxious, riding there for the first time after a two-year break. The bikes will be more competitive than ever, the rider level will be high and we’ll have a lot of attention on us, but once the race starts we’ll all be pushing to the max, because that’s our job at the end of the day”.
