After a failed attempt in 2020, the Marquez brothers will be sharing a MotoGP garage once again in 2024. Alex Marquez ran a good season with team Gresini last year and now sees the arrival of brother Marc, who is ready to write a new chapter in his career. How will they get on together? The pair spoke about this during an Estrella Galicia event.

Marc Marquez:“Your team-mate is your first rival, here it's all in the family"

“Your team-mate is your first rival but in this case it’s all in the family”, admits Marc Marquez. The goal remains the same: “We’re both here to compete, it’s in our DNA. Sure it would be better for me to beat Alex, just as he wants to get the better of me”.

Off track the usual collaboration will continue: “The main thing is to try and help each other as we’ve always done at home. On track, we’ll each have our own technical team and our own issues”. Each rider focuses on their own performance and needs: “It’s not even good to talk too much about things because sometimes my comments might be very different to his. We’ll carry on as we always have, helping each other as much as possible at home to prepare well for the race weekends”.

The benefit Marc’s arrival could bring for Alex

In 2023, Alex Marquez won two Sprints and scored two podiums in the Sunday races, and he is aiming to do more this coming season. Having a team-mate like Marc can only help him in this respect: “In my own personal experience, when I’ve had a team-mate that I’ve got on well with, those have been my best seasons, like in 2019 when I had Xavi Vierge as a team-mate in Moto2 and I won the title”.

A good relationship with a team-mate can help more than one might expect, as Alex himself confirms: “Being competitive on track but also getting on well off track and forming a sort of ‘team’ doesn’t just help you in the work you have to do together but it also means the riders join forces and can talk about things that they might not talk about with a different team-mate – this ensures everyone works in the same direction.
