The second MotoGP free practice session has now played out at Assen, and there’s no change at the top. Just as he did this morning, Marco Bezzecchi again places first, setting a best of 1’32”063. It looks as if the Italian will play a starring role this weekend, rounding out Friday 0.130 of a second ahead of Jorge Martin, who improves on his FP1 performance.

The Ducati duo is followed by Jack Miller, who did well to progress from twelfth to third place in the final stages, the best KTM rider of the day. Chasing the Australian is Pecco Bagnaia, who appears to have solved his earlier issues with the GP23 now looking more stable. Maverick Vinales rounds out the top five as the best-placed Aprilia rider.

Quartararo grits his teeth, Marquez crashes

Fabio Quartararo gets his smile back, quicker during his final exits despite his physical condition and placing ahead of Aleix Espargaró, seventh despite a tiff with Franco Morbidelli in the final stages, one that saw the Italian forced to settle for sixteenth place. Top ten also for Brad Binder, Luca Marini – who came close to a top three placement on more than one occasion – and Alex Marquez, the last to gain direct entry to Q2, given that the session results mirror the combined standings.

Johann Zarco closes eleventh, in difficulty with respect to his team-mate, while Enea Bastianini places fifteenth. Eighteenth for Fabio Di Giannantonio, followed by a Marc Marquez who continues to struggle. After another grey session, the Spaniard crashed in the final stages as soon as he tried to push to improve his time. Another front-end crash, like many we have seen recently. Twentieth for Lorenzo Savadori.
