Aprilia RS 660: is a “PreMoto2” based on the Trofeo in the pipeline?

With test rider Tommaso Marcon, the Noale manufacturer is developing what might become the intermediate step for young riders who dream of Moto2

The second edition of the Aprilia RS 660 Cup has drawn to an end with victory for both Mongiardo and Toth (the latter will also compete in the European Moto2 at Valencia), but the Noale manufacturer already has plans in place for next season as it continues working to develop its riders.

A track model is in the works in fact and this may well be a sort of “PreMoto2”, falling somewhere between the RS 660 and the current Moto2 that we see in the world and European championships. A step that would further highlight Aprilia’s desire to develop its very own ‘supply chain’ of young talents that it can support all the way from the national Trofeo, organized by BK Corse, up to the most important international levels.

Already tested on track by Marcon (and Rivola)

Although still in the development phase, the new Aprilia model has already taken to the track with test rider Tommaso Marcon and presents interesting technical solutions including a new swing-arm, stiffer and more lightweight than that of the "Trofeo", a machined from solid steering plate and a “flat” tank that differs from the original, which was ill-suited for racing use, and that should also allow taller riders to tuck behind the fairings.

The bike, which has different fairings to the "standard" version, has been tested at both the Cremona and Mugello circuits, and even used by Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola at Imola. Lips are sealed at Aprilia and BK Corse with regard to the new project (which could also see changes made to the engine), but testing will no doubt continue into 2023. We await updates as to its eventual (and imminent) use in the races.
