Pecco Bagnaia is currently the Italian rider of reference in the top class, his fifth win of the season having recently confirmed this status. In Austria, the Italian won his third race in a row, one of only a very small group of riders to have done so in MotoGP, as he joins the likes of Valentino Rossi, Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo, Marc Marquez and Casey Stoner. The Academy rider has clearly developed a taste for success, having amassed nineteen career wins to date, nine of which in the top class.

Bagnaia becomes the fifth most successful Italian rider of all time

Pecco Bagnaia has now won his ninth MotoGP race, matching the results of Sete Gibernau, Maverick Viñales and Loris Capirossi. Alongside Loris, he is the fifth most successful Italian in the reigning class (500-MotoGP), behind Valentino Rossi, Giacomo Agostini, Andrea Dovizioso and Max Biaggi. In this special classification, "Pecco" has now moved ahead of Luca Cadalora, Kenny Roberts Jr and Gary Hocking, all with eight wins. And now Bagnaia is just two victories from Phil Read and Fabio Quartararo. With both the Frenchman and the Italian set to continue to build on their success, the stage is set for a thrilling duel.

Leading the way in terms of overall success are two Italians, or rather Valentino Rossi with 89 wins, and Giacomo Agostini with 68. In third place, and just nine races behind Ago, lies Marc Marquez, who will have his sights set on increasing his tally just as soon as he’s physically fit. The Spanish rider has recently passed another legendary Honda rider, Mick Doohan, who places fifth with 54 wins. Mick lies ahead of Jorge Lorenzo with 47, Casey Stoner with 38 and Mike Hailwood with 37.
