Despite it still being just an idea, the rumours about a possible new sprint race in MotoGP continue to gather pace. An announcement may come as soon as tomorrow, as the Red Bull Ring paddock awaits news.

In the meantime, various staff members have voiced their thoughts, starting with several team managers. Davide Tardozzi, Francesco Guidotti and Wilco Zeelenberg have all confirmed that they are in favour of this possible change: "As with anything new, it needs to catch on". Yes, but there are some points to clarify, with the solution potentially only applying to the reigning class: “We’re ready to embrace a new race format.” And if IRTA president and KTM Tech3 owner Hervè Poncharal says so, then we believe it.

Sprint Race? Tardozzi says ‘yes’

Davide heads up the factory team that currently fields Pecco Bagnaia and Jack Miller: "This idea was in the air, and now it’s taking shape. I think we should be enthusiastic about it, although we need to be clear on how to do it and where. I think it’s a good thing in terms of the show.”

Tardozzi explains how the system is changing: "The racing world moves on and we need to move with it and keep up with the times. The aim is to improve, to grow. We’ll see what’s decided, but for now I positively support the initiative.”

Guidotti and Zeelenberg: "Let’s see what the riders say"

Francesco heads up the factory Red Bull KTM team, while Wilco steers WithU RNF. The Italian comments: “Yes, we’re talking about a sprint race on Saturday and we’re waiting for updates. Change should be embraced with enthusiasm and curiosity, and so that’s what I intend to do.”

Guidotti adds an aside: "It’s only right to hear what the riders think – and we will - because they need to evaluate the various aspects.  There will be pros and cons, for now we’re focusing on the pros. We’ll see, it might be an interesting and fruitful initiative, the ways and means need to be considered.”

Former rider Zeelenberg adds: "It’ll definitely add to the show, and we’ll see if it brings more spectators to the track on Saturday. They’re talking about a sprint race at only 18 tracks, the maximum possible based on the calendar".
