MotoGP, Marc Marquez: “When I return, my aim won’t be to win”

The Spaniard has laid out the steps to take once he is back on board the Honda RC213V

It finally seems that there’s light at the end of the tunnel for Marc Marquez. His recovery following a fourth surgery on the arm he injured at Jerez in 2020 looks to be going well, something that the Spaniard himself has confirmed during an interview with Deportes Cuatro.

Marquez's confidence

"I’ve been through four surgeries and it now looks like I’m on the right path”, says the eight-time world champion. Marc goes on to admit that his latest operation, which took place on 2 June, was really a last hope: “I was very sure about having this fourth surgery, because I had two options, either have the surgery or retire, there were no other possibilities”.

A confession that says a lot about the Honda Repsol rider’s suffering in recent months, but the rider now seems more determined than ever to get back in the saddle: “My aim is no longer to win, but to be able to have fun on my bike again, he insists. “I want to be back riding, but without being in pain. If I can do that, then the rest will come.”

The next steps

In the meantime, Marquez has already confirmed that he’ll attend the Austrian round at the Red Bull Ring, over the weekend of 20-21 August, in order to spend time with the team, before undergoing another medical checkup at the end of the month. An appointment that will be very important in terms of establishing when #93 might be able to return to the MotoGP tracks.
