No MotoGP for Fernandez: Augusto like Rabat and Zarco

No MotoGP for Fernandez: Augusto like Rabat and Zarco

If he wins the Moto2 title, the Spaniard won’t move up to the reigning class - he runs the "risk" of suffering the same fate as Tito and Johann, who had to wait another year for the call

After a shaky start, the Spaniard soon began to pick off his rivals at an alarming rate. As Moto2 championship leader, Augusto Fernandez swears he’s only looking ahead, despite knowing that the points he’s lost along the way would have made for an even more convincing lead.

What’s done is done anyway, and it’s another team Ajo KTM rider who’s running up front. Last year, the battle between Remy Gardner and Raul Fernandez was ultimately won by the Australian, after a hard-fought derby within the ranks of the Red Bull-backed orange team. Today, Augusto is the team’s only hope of title success.

But if he is able to do it, it’s likely that Augusto will remain exactly where he is, considering that there are no free MotoGP seats. If this is the case, he’ll be following in the footsteps of two well-known predecessors, namely Tito Rabat and Johann Zarco.

Rabat, champion in waiting

Esteve, commonly known as "Tito", made his intermediate class debut in 2014. The Catalan rider raced with the Honda-powered Kalex fielded by team Marc VDS, winning seven of the eighteen races he ran.

He thought he’d be moving up but no, the Spaniard stayed where he was for another year, rounding out the season in third place. He was pipped to the post by two riders who are now MotoGP frontrunners, or rather Alex Rins, aboard the factory Suzuki GSX-RR, and Johann Zarco, who ultimately secured the title trophy. For Tito, the move to MotoGP came in 2016, by way of the same Marc VDS team and the Honda RC 212V.

Zarco, deja vu in Moto2

The Frenchman is known for his backflips. This is how Zarco would celebrate success in Moto2, and he would later do much the same in MotoGP. Yes, later. After winning the 2015 intermediate class title, Johann did it again in 2016.

The Ajo Motosport team was very happy, counting fifteen race wins in all. And the Cannes native was equally pleased, but before he moved to the Tech3 Yamaha in MotoGP, he tested the Suzuki. A bold test, carried out in Japan, that saw the Frenchman take to the track with the GSX-RR. Remember?
