German GP, disaster for Honda at the Sachsenring: from riches to rags

German GP, disaster for Honda at the Sachsenring: from riches to rags

The Tokyo manufacturer was used to winning at the German track with Marc Marquez, but this year it suffered its worst performance to date

Honda felt Marc Marquez’s absence at the Sachsenring to a much greater extent than it had probably imagined. Over the last eight years, the Spaniard had always dominated and win the German race aboard the RC213V, but the same bike failed to reach the points zone in yesterday’s race. A situation that only highlights the difficult moment the Tokyo manufacturer is experiencing.

A resounding defeat in Germany

A Honda had won the last eleven editions of the Sachsenring race, with Marc Marquez from 2013 to 2021 and, before that, with Dani Pedrosa from 2010 to 2012. But this year, not one of the four bikes scored points. Alex Marquez was the first to be ruled out, with a technical problem, after which his LCR team-mate Takaaki Nakagami crashed, and Pol Espargaró was forced to retire. The only Honda to reach the finish line was that of test rider Stefan Bradl, Marc Marquez’s replacement, who finished sixteenth. A complete failure.

Like 40 years ago, but for very different reasons

The last time Honda failed to reach the points zone was back in 1982, when all of the Tokyo manufacturer’s riders, or rather Freddie Spencer, Marco Lucchinelli, and Takazumi Katayama, decided not to race due to treacherous conditions at the Nogaro track.

There is no denying that the situation Honda is currently facing in MotoGP is fairly serious, and it’s becoming clear that it cannot be Marc Marquez alone who resolves the issue.
