The number of Aspar Team bikes competing in Moto3 is growing. At this weekend’s Portuguese round, there will in fact be three Gas Gas bikes on track, riders Sergio Garcia and Izan Guevara (both expected to be frontrunners) set to be flanked by David Alonso, a young Colombian talent who will be making his second appearance in the world championship.

The number 80 rider already took part in last year’s Misano round, standing in for Garcia during a season that saw him lift the Red Bull Rookies Cup trophy. This year he will race in the FIM JuniorGP Moto3 championship that will get underway at Estoril on 8 May, riding the team Aspar Gas Gas. And so the Portimão GP will be his first event of the season, one he will use as a training exercise ahead of the Junior world championship.

Alonso: “The only goal will be to learn”

“I am excited to be able to compete again in the World Championship”, comments Alonso, keen to get back out on track. “I already did it last year in Misano, so I know what a race weekend is like. Also, for me it will be the first race of the year and it will serve as training for the FIM Junior GP. My goal is to learn and enjoy the moment and the opportunity that the team gives me, to extract the maximum information and be able to apply it later in my championship”.
