After the terrifying incident of 2020, a modification has now been made to the Austrian track

30.03.2022 ( Aggiornata il 30.03.2022 18:23 )

It was August 2020 when we witnessed a very scary accident at the Red Bull Ring, not so much for the incident itself, but rather for the dynamics, the bikes flying onto a section of the track while the race was in progress. As a result of that worrying episode, which fortunately had no serious consequences, the decision was taken to modify a section of the track for obvious safety reasons.

What modification has been made to the Red Bull Ring and what will change?

The restructuring work began in November 2021, as agreed by FIM, Dorna and the FIA, and the new track section is now ready. Designer Hermann Tilke has introduced a chicane on the north-west side, mainly for the bikes, while Formula 1 will continue to use the previous layout.

So the modification regards turn 2, where the bikes' top speed will now be reduced. As reported on the motogp.com website, Tilke states: “It was important to reduce the speed around this section of track in MotoGP. This has been done with the compact right-left combination that prevents any impact on the rest of the track. The planning proved very challenging due to the topography of the land”. The work is now complete and we must wait until August, when we will see just how this change will impact on the MotoGP race.
