Arbolino: “I want to show everyone what I’m capable of in Moto2”

The Italian can’t wait to start the 2022 season with the new team, with whom he is immediately getting on well. Here are his words

2021 saw Tony Arbolino debut in Moto2, a season in which he scored a best result of fourth in France and secured one of the most sought-after rides in the category with the Elf Marc VDS Racing Team, which he describes as “one of the best in the history of the Moto2 class”. In an interview published on the Belgian team’s website, he explains The atmosphere I’ve found is perfect for me. This is a team that can help me win and I’m sure that I can score better results and become a better rider with them”.

Summing up 2021

The work together has already begun during private testing at Jerez. The Italian admits: “This team is incredible. I already have a really good relationship with the team and they’re very professional. I like the mentality of all those involved. I’ve never had such a strong feeling about a project before”. As for his first season in the intermediate category, the 21-year comments: “There were highs and lows but I learned a lot and that will make me stronger. I can’t deny that I expected more and thought I’d be able to fight for the podium sometimes but it wasn’t possible”.

Where to improve

He describes himself thus: “Firstly, I think I’m a good rider. I like to think that when I need to be, I’m aggressive and also consistent”. He’s just lacking the right feeling: “My strength is that when I feel confident and at ease with the bike, I can make the difference. Like every rider, I’m always trying to improve all round”. As for his weaknesses:I’d like to be stronger in all conditions and think that this team can help me improve as a rider”.

Alongside Sam Lowes

The change of team also brings a change of team-mate, Tony now finding himself alongside ‘veteran’ Sam Lowes: Even when I was in Moto3, I always tried to follow him closely because his results make him a rider of reference in this class. It’s incredible to be in the same garage and I want to use his experience in order to progress”. This aside, the pair have instilled a good relationship: “Being with him gives me confidence and motivation. He’s also a nice guy and I can’t wait to have fun with him, on and off the track”.
