The Malaysian giant will no longer sponsor the Sepang Racing Team, which withdraws from the minor classes to focus on the reigning class. Doubts as to the riders, with Darryn Binder at the top of the list
The second consecutive weekend at the Red Bull Ring opened with an action-packed Friday on track, but particularly off track, with team Petronas SRT announcing a drastic change for next season.
The Sepang Racing Team will in fact be without main sponsor Petronas in 2022, which means the team will withdraw from Moto2 and Moto3 in order to safeguard the MotoGP project, aspects of which are still in doubt. The Yamaha client team will also have Spec B bikes, so not full factory like the Ducatis of team Pramac for example.
With the announcement of Valentino Rossi’s retirement and with Marco Bezzecchi close to joining the VR46 team alongside Marini, the Malaysian team is still searching for the two riders who will ride its Yamahas next season, with Darryn Binder in pole position. The South African could well move directly from Moto3 to MotoGP, as Jack Miller did in the past.
The second free seat could be taken by either Jake Dixon or Iker Lecuona, although the team would like a more experienced rider in order to be able to aim for strong results. The situation is still evolving and we will know more in the coming weeks.
