Winds of change are circling in MotoGP. As reported by Motorsport.com colleagues, Dorna is thinking about introducing a new sprint race, similar to what F1 has done, in that three of its 2021 rounds included an additional short race.
But Dorna is looking to do something a little different, with the intention of including a sprint race in the schedule of every championship round. The race would run over a little more than half the distance of the classic Sunday race, and offer half the number of points.
Meeting on the horizon
Various manufacturers appear to be in agreement with this potential change, but it will be discussed in depth during the Safety Commission meeting taking place this afternoon at the Red Bull Ring.
We now await official confirmation, to understand whether MotoGP will actually implement this significant change to the format, which would also see the elimination of warm up and one of the free practice sessions.
